Is Problemista Actually WORTH THE HYPE?

Problemista is the feature directorial debut of Julio Torres, a surrealist comedy-drama that leans hard into oddball charm, immigration anxieties, and the absurdities of the art world. The story centers on Alejandro, a toy designer from El Salvador whose work visa is about to expire. He moves to New York to chase his creative dreams, but when Hasbro won’t bite, he ends up working under Elizabeth—a cantankerous, oversized personality in the art-scene—hoping she can help him stay in the country and get his foot in the door.

The movie’s mood swings are big—on one hand, there’s creative whimsy: bizarre toy concepts, strange visual gags (like a toy truck with a flat tire, or personified Craigslist ads), and surreal settings that feel like daydreams meets low-grade nightmares. On the other hand, there’s real emotional weight in Alejandro’s struggle: the stress of visa expiration, feeling unseen, trying to stay hopeful in a system built to ignore you. Torres balances sweetness with frustration.

Tilda Swinton shines (maybe too brightly at times) as Elizabeth, giving a performance that’s loud, messy, and terrifyingly funny. Swinton’s energy is the kind that can pull you in—or push you away, depending on how heavy the weirdness feels in a given scene. Torres himself plays Alejandro with quiet sincerity, his awkwardness and optimism serving as both a comfort and a mirror to the film’s more outrageous moments.

Where Problemista works best: tone, design, and ideas. The visuals are inventive; the art and surreal touches help illustrate not just Alejandro’s dreams but his fears. The film isn’t perfect—occasionally the whimsy overshadows the stakes, and some of the humor doesn’t land for everyone. Also, the emotional arcs sometimes feel under-explored, with side characters left more as symbols than full people.

Final Score: 7.5 / 10. Problemista is a refreshingly weird film, full of heart and creativity. It’s not for everyone, but if you like your movies strange, thoughtful, and visually bold, it’s absolutely worth a watch.
