Few modern romance stories have crossed formats and cultures quite like True Beauty. What began as a wildly popular Korean webtoon evolved into a hit live-action K-drama and most recently, into an anime adaptation that quickly became one of Crunchyroll’s standout romance titles in 2024.

Watch here.

Now, fans can officially look forward to more: Season 2 of the animated adaptation was announced on January 4, 2025, and it will stream on Crunchyroll upon release. At the time of writing, however, no official release date has been confirmed.

Let’s break down how True Beauty became a global phenomenon, and what Season 2 could mean for the story.

Originally created by Yaongyi, True Beauty debuted as a webtoon in 2018 and quickly became one of the most-read romance series online. Its premise was simple but emotionally charged:

A teenage girl, Lim Jugyeong, transforms her appearance through expert makeup skills after years of being bullied for not fitting conventional beauty standards.

The series resonated deeply with readers for two key reasons:

The love triangle between Jugyeong, Lee Suho, and Han Seojun.
Its honest look at body image, insecurity, and social pressure.

The webtoon’s mix of humor, drama, and romantic tension made it an obvious candidate for adaptation.

The 2020 K-Drama: A Breakout Hit

The story gained international momentum with the 2020 live-action adaptation starring Moon Ga-young, Cha Eun-woo, and Hwang In-yeop.

True Beauty became a major K-drama success, particularly among global streaming audiences. It amplified the emotional stakes of the love triangle and leaned into the charm of its cast, turning Suho and Seojun into fan-favorite romantic rivals.

While the drama softened some of the webtoon’s darker themes, it maintained the core message:
Beauty is often performance, and the pressure to meet unrealistic standards can be crushing.

The K-drama significantly expanded the story’s international reach, especially among viewers discovering Korean romance series for the first time.

The 2024 Anime Adaptation

In 2024, the franchise evolved again with a full animated adaptation, produced for international audiences and streamed via Crunchyroll.

Unlike the live-action version, the anime leaned more closely into the tone and pacing of the original webtoon. It balanced romantic tension with comedic timing and gave more space to Jugyeong’s internal struggles.

Despite condensing a large amount of source material into its first season, the anime quickly became one of Crunchyroll’s most successful romance series of 2024, praised for:

Faithful character portrayals
Clean, expressive animation
Strong emotional beats
A sharper focus on body image commentary

Season 2 Officially Announced

On January 4, 2025, Season 2 was officially confirmed. Crunchyroll will stream the series upon release, though a premiere date has not yet been revealed.

This announcement reassured fans who worried that the fast pacing of Season 1 might leave the story unfinished. With a second season secured, the anime now has space to explore:

The evolving relationship between Jugyeong and Suho
Seojun’s emotional arc
The long-term consequences of Jugyeong’s secret
Deeper themes around identity and self-worth

At its core, True Beauty isn’t just a romance. It’s a critique of modern beauty culture.

Jugyeong’s transformation through makeup initially gives her confidence and social acceptance, but it also traps her in fear. The anxiety of being “found out” becomes a constant burden, highlighting the pressure placed on young women to meet narrow standards.

The story challenges:

Unrealistic beauty ideals
Social media vanity culture
The idea that worth equals appearance

That’s why audiences remain invested in the central love triangle. It’s not just about “who she ends up with”, it’s about who sees her for who she truly is.

True Beauty has successfully transitioned from webtoon to K-drama to anime, a rare feat that speaks to the strength of its storytelling.

Its enduring popularity comes not just from romantic tension between Jugyeong, Suho, and Seojun, but from the way it addresses real anxieties about identity and acceptance in a hyper-visual world.

With Season 2 officially on the way, the story of True Beauty is far from over and fans around the world are ready to see what comes next.
