Remember Golden Axe? The 1989 arcade classic is now an animated series

If you spent any part of your childhood hitting things with swords in an arcade, Sega has something very strange waiting for you.

Golden Axe is now an animated television series.

All ten episodes of the fantasy action-comedy premiered on Paramount+ on 16 September 2026, taking Sega’s side-scrolling 1989 arcade classic and transforming it into a full animated adventure.

Yes, that Golden Axe.

Ax Battler. Tyris Flare. Gilius Thunderhead. Death Adder.

They are all here.

Back to Yuria

The series reunites Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they once again attempt to save Yuria from Death Adder, a villain whose relationship with staying dead remains rather flexible.

The twist is the addition of Hampton Squib, an inexperienced adventurer whose enthusiasm significantly exceeds his qualifications.

Mike McMahan, known for Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Joe Chandler created the animated series.

The voice cast includes Matthew Rhys, Danny Pudi, Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre and Carl Tart.

From arcade cabinet to streaming comedy

The original Golden Axe launched in arcades in 1989 before appearing on Sega hardware and becoming one of the company’s recognisable early fantasy properties.

Its appeal was beautifully uncomplicated.

Pick a fantasy warrior.

Fight through armies.

Occasionally steal a creature from an enemy and ride it.

Eventually find Death Adder and explain your disagreement using an enormous weapon.

The new series is not attempting to disguise that history. Paramount+ describes it specifically as a comedic homage to the game.

That may be the smartest way to approach material built around exaggerated swords-and-sorcery action.

Another old game gets a new life

What makes Golden Axe particularly fun for NerdiPop is the sheer distance between its original moment and this adaptation.

We have reached a point where games that once required an arcade token are becoming streaming franchises.

Not remasters.

Not retro collections.

Television series.

All ten episodes of Golden Axe are streaming on Paramount+ now.

Death Adder has returned again.

Some things in gaming never change.
