After years of anticipation, Disney’s live-action remake of Hercules is still in the works, but the road to bringing it to theaters has been much slower than many fans expected.

The project was first announced in 2020 as part of The Walt Disney Company’s ongoing effort to adapt its animated classics into live-action films. Fans were immediately excited, especially since the original Hercules remains one of Disney’s most loved musicals. The story follows Hercules, the son of Zeus, as he trains with Phil to become a true hero, falls for Megara, and battles against the schemes of Hades. Its mix of mythology, humor, and music helped make it a fan favorite and one of Disney’s most memorable animated films.

Disney confirmed in April 2020 that Joe Russo and Anthony Russo would produce the film through AGBO, with Dave Callaham writing the screenplay. From the start, Disney made it clear this would not be a scene-by-scene remake, but a new version inspired by the animated original while expanding on its world and characters.

In 2022, Guy Ritchie joined as director, reuniting with Disney after the success of Aladdin. Producer Joe Russo later described the project as “experimental,” saying Disney wanted this adaptation to feel different from its earlier remakes while still keeping its musical roots. That comment sparked curiosity about how the songs and story might be updated for modern audiences.

Since then, updates have been scarce. As of 2026, Disney has not announced any casting for Hercules, Megara, Phil, Hades, or Zeus, and there is still no production start date or release timeline.

Recent reports suggest the film may have gone through creative changes, including early ideas that explored putting more focus on Hades before shifting back to Hercules’ story. Disney has not officially confirmed those reports.

For now, the project remains in development, with the Russo Brothers still attached as producers and Guy Ritchie remaining the last officially announced director. Until Disney shares its next update, Hercules remains one of the studio’s most anticipated but uncertain upcoming remakes.
