Hideo Kojima’s next espionage protagonist has a face, and horror fans will know it extremely well.

Kojima Productions has officially confirmed that Bill Skarsgård will play the lead role in PHYSINT, Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage project. The announcement arrived during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast alongside a new poster featuring Skarsgård and actor Charlee Fraser.

For anyone whose fandom interests cross between movies and gaming, this is a particularly interesting combination.

Skarsgård is immediately recognisable as Pennywise from It and It Chapter Two, but his genre résumé extends through Nosferatu, The Crow, Barbarian and John Wick: Chapter 4.

Now he is entering a Hideo Kojima game.

Kojima returns to espionage

Kojima is, of course, inseparable from the history of Metal Gear. His work on that series helped redefine stealth games and became increasingly cinematic as technology developed.

That is why PHYSINT has attracted so much attention since its announcement.

Kojima has described the project as an action-espionage game and as a culmination of more than four decades of his career. The project is still in development and does not currently have a confirmed release date.

The publishing situation has also changed. Xbox is now publishing PHYSINT, extending its existing relationship with Kojima Productions on OD – KNOCK.

Skarsgård isn’t alone

Charlee Fraser had already been connected with PHYSINT, and Kojima Productions has also confirmed Don Lee and Minami Hamabe as part of the ensemble.

Kojima revealed that costume fittings, scans and camera tests involving Skarsgård and Fraser had already taken place earlier in 2026.

Exactly who these characters are remains under wraps.

That is probably the right place to stop before the internet starts constructing 400-page conspiracy diagrams from the poster.

Games and cinema continue to collide

Kojima has spent years talking about the relationship between games and cinema, and his productions frequently cast recognisable screen actors.

Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Mads Mikkelsen, Elle Fanning and others have already moved through Kojima’s strange worlds.

Putting Skarsgård at the centre of PHYSINT therefore feels less like celebrity casting for its own sake and more like another step in the creator’s continuing attempt to blur the boundaries between games and film.

We still know remarkably little about PHYSINT itself.

But we now know who will be standing at the centre of it.

And if you’ve watched Skarsgård play Pennywise, Count Orlok or the Marquis in John Wick: Chapter 4, you already know that Hideo Kojima has chosen someone who is very comfortable being unsettling.
