To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar Review

To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar is a vibrant, feel good road movie that still feels surprisingly progressive decades later. Starring Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo, the film makes a bold and genuinely impactful casting choice by placing actors known at the time for tougher, more action driven roles into the world of drag.

Watch here.

Swayze and Snipes, both firmly established as action stars, completely subvert expectations with performances that are elegant, funny, and deeply sincere. Leguizamo, who had also taken on action oriented roles earlier in his career, adds even more energy and heart to the trio. There is a real sense of commitment in their performances. They do not play dress up, they embody these characters with warmth and respect, helping the film avoid parody and instead lean into celebration.

Beyond the casting, the film thrives on its heart. As the trio travels cross country and ends up stranded in a small town, the story becomes less about the journey and more about the people they touch along the way. It blends campy humour, iconic fashion, and quotable moments with a sincere message about acceptance, identity, and chosen family. The tone is light, but the impact is lasting, gently challenging prejudice without ever losing its sense of fun.

While it can feel a little simplistic at times, that simplicity is also part of its charm. It is an easy, uplifting watch that leaves you smiling, while also appreciating how quietly groundbreaking it was, especially in the way it redefined masculinity through the unexpected casting of action stars in such unapologetically glamorous roles.
