The Goonies Is Officially Heading Back to the Big Screen

Nearly four decades after a group of misfit kids followed a treasure map beneath their quiet coastal town, The Goonies may finally be heading toward a return.

Warner Bros. is developing a new film connected to the beloved 1985 adventure classic. After years of rumors, false starts, and fan speculation, the project has taken a real step forward, with Potsy Ponciroli attached to write the screenplay. Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus are also reportedly involved as producers.

At this stage, the project is still in early development. No director has been announced, no release date has been set, and Warner Bros. has not confirmed which original cast members, if any, will return.

The film is widely expected to function as a continuation rather than a full reboot, though story details remain under wraps. A legacy sequel could introduce a new generation of young adventurers while leaving room for familiar faces from the original film to appear, but those details have not yet been confirmed.

Several original cast members, including Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, and Ke Huy Quan, have expressed interest over the years in revisiting The Goonies if the right story came together. Their possible involvement would be a major draw for longtime fans, but casting has not been finalized.

Directed by Richard Donner and produced by Spielberg, The Goonies became one of the defining family adventure films of the 1980s. Its mix of humor, danger, friendship, and treasure-hunting wonder helped it become a lasting pop-culture favorite.

That legacy also makes any follow-up a delicate challenge. A new Goonies film would need to honor the spirit of the original while offering a fresh story for modern audiences. Recent legacy sequels have shown that passing the torch can work, but only when the heart of the original is preserved.

For now, the treasure map is back on the table — but the journey is still just beginning.
