Avengers: Endgame Is Back in Cinemas — With New Connections to Doomsday

By Published On: October 3rd, 2026

Marvel has done something unusual with one of the biggest movies ever made. Seven years after Avengers: Endgame brought the Infinity Saga to an emotional conclusion, the film has returned to cinemas as Avengers: Endgame Encore.

But this isn’t simply Marvel putting an old blockbuster back on the big screen. The new release contains additional material connecting Endgame with Avengers: Doomsday.

In other words, Marvel has taken what was once the ending of its biggest story and turned it into part of the setup for its next one.

Endgame isn’t quite over anymore

The original Avengers: Endgame felt remarkably final. Tony Stark sacrificed himself. Steve Rogers returned the Infinity Stones before choosing to remain in the past with Peggy Carter. Thanos was defeated. And after more than a decade of interconnected films, the Infinity Saga appeared complete.

Now Marvel is deliberately reopening that story. The Encore presentation contains new material designed to bridge the events of Endgame and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

That material includes connections involving characters and ideas that have become increasingly important to the MCU’s multiverse storyline. And perhaps most intriguingly, it brings Doctor Doom into the conversation.

Robert Downey Jr. changes the meaning of the story

Robert Downey Jr.’s return to Marvel as Victor von Doom remains one of the strangest and most fascinating decisions in MCU history.

For more than a decade, Downey was Tony Stark. Now one of Marvel’s most famous villains will have exactly the same face.

The new Endgame material appears to lean into that connection rather than avoiding it.

One sequence reportedly draws a visual parallel between Tony Stark constructing his Iron Man technology and Doom creating his famous mask.

That does not necessarily tell us why Doom resembles Tony.

Marvel still has plenty of secrets surrounding the character.

But it makes one thing very clear: Downey’s history as Iron Man is not something Marvel expects audiences simply to forget.

The rerelease became a genuine event

Perhaps even more surprising is how strongly audiences responded.

According to Disney, Avengers: Endgame Encore earned approximately $86 million worldwide during its opening weekend, with around $26 million coming from North America and $60 million internationally.

That is an extraordinary result for a movie originally released in 2019.

It also demonstrates something Marvel clearly understands.

Fans remain deeply attached to the Infinity Saga.

And Marvel is now using that attachment to build excitement for Doomsday.

Is Marvel changing how rereleases work?

Movie rereleases are nothing new.

Studios regularly return popular films to cinemas for anniversaries, restorations and special events.

But Endgame Encore is doing something slightly different.

Marvel isn’t merely asking audiences to revisit an old movie.

It has added material specifically designed to connect that movie to a future release.

That effectively turns part of the MCU’s back catalogue into an active part of its current storytelling.

If this strategy works, it raises an interesting possibility.

Could Marvel do the same with other older MCU films?

Instead of audiences simply being told to rewatch previous movies before a major release, Marvel could potentially turn those rewatches into theatrical events.

Do you need to see Endgame Encore before Doomsday?

Probably not in the strictest sense.

Marvel isn’t likely to release its next major Avengers movie in a way that becomes incomprehensible unless audiences attended a limited theatrical rerelease.

But the Encore footage is clearly intended to strengthen the connection between the two films.

And that alone tells us something about Doomsday.

Marvel wants this to feel connected to what came before.

The next Avengers movie isn’t simply beginning a new story.

It is reaching all the way back to Endgame.

Seven years ago, Endgame told audiences that part of the Marvel story was finished.

Now Marvel has gone back and added another door.
