Casper Is Getting a Live-Action Disney+ Series and It’s Taking a Darker Turn

After years of dormancy, Casper the Friendly Ghost is officially making a comeback.

A new live-action Casper television series is in development for Disney+, bringing the classic ghost character back to screens in a way audiences have never seen before. This time, however, the tone appears to be very different from the playful family-friendly image many grew up with.

According to confirmed industry reports, the new series is being developed as a darker reimagining of the character, blending supernatural mystery with coming-of-age storytelling.

That shift in tone has already sparked comparisons online to Wednesday, although Disney has not officially framed it that way.

A New Chapter for Casper

Casper first appeared in the late 1930s before becoming one of the most recognizable animated and comic characters of the 20th century. Unlike traditional ghosts designed to scare people, Casper was famous for wanting friendship rather than fear.

That simple concept made him a standout character for generations.

The most famous adaptation remains the 1995 film Casper, starring Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman, which blended live action and CGI and became a cult favorite.

Since then, the franchise has largely stayed quiet outside animated spin-offs and smaller projects.

This Disney+ reboot marks the character’s biggest return in decades.

Who’s Behind the New Series?

The project has major names attached.

Steven Spielberg will executive produce through Amblin Entertainment, giving the series serious creative backing.

The show is being written and produced by Hilary Winston and Rob Letterman, with Letterman also expected to direct.

Letterman is best known for directing Pokémon Detective Pikachu, which successfully blended live-action storytelling with CGI characters.

That experience makes him a strong fit for a project like Casper.

Why the Darker Tone?

The new version appears to be moving away from pure family comedy and leaning more into supernatural drama and mystery.

That does not mean Casper will suddenly become horror.

Instead, it suggests a more emotionally layered story, possibly focusing on loneliness, grief, friendship, and what it means to be “stuck” between worlds.

That deeper emotional angle could give the franchise a modern update while keeping Casper’s heart intact.

What We Don’t Know Yet

Right now, there is no cast attached and no release date.

Disney has not revealed plot details beyond the darker reinvention concept.

For now, the project remains in early development.

But one thing is clear: Casper is coming back, and this time the world around him may be stranger, darker, and more mysterious than ever before.

For longtime fans, it could be the most interesting version of the Friendly Ghost yet.
