DC’s Dynamic Duo has found both Robins – but Batman is still the big unanswered question
DC’s upcoming Dynamic Duo movie now has Dick Grayson. It has Jason Todd. It has members of the Red Hood Gang.
It has a new release date. But there is one rather conspicuous absence.
Batman.
The animated feature has confirmed Mason Thames as Dick Grayson and Logan Kim as Jason Todd, giving DC two Robins for one of its most unusual upcoming Batman-related projects. Bruce Wayne, however, has not yet been officially cast.
Two Robins, one very different origin
Dynamic Duo is not simply retelling the familiar comic-book histories of Dick and Jason. The movie will depict them as childhood friends and fellow orphans whose lives eventually move in very different directions. Dick is taken in by Bruce Wayne and becomes Robin.
Jason becomes involved with the criminal Red Hood Gang. That is already a major departure from their normal comic chronology.
In the comics, Dick Grayson is Batman’s first Robin and eventually becomes Nightwing. Jason Todd succeeds him as Robin, is murdered by the Joker and later returns as the antihero Red Hood. The film is instead placing the two boys together from the beginning.
Who is in the cast?
Mason Thames, who starred as Hiccup in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, voices Dick Grayson. Logan Kim voices Jason Todd. Lee Pace has been cast as Red Hood One and Steve Buscemi as Red Hood Two. Those are the roles currently confirmed through trade reporting.
Some other names have circulated online in connection with the project, but until DC Studios or reliable trade sources confirm them, they should remain rumours.
This will not look like a normal animated DC movie
The visual approach is one of the most intriguing things about Dynamic Duo. Director Arthur Mintz and Swaybox Studios are using a combination of computer animation, models and large-scale puppetry. The project has previously been described as mixing miniatures, puppets, animatronics and CG rather than relying on a conventional animation pipeline. Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho is producing alongside DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. That combination makes Dynamic Duo an unusually experimental Batman-related project, particularly for a theatrical family-oriented film.
The release date has moved
The movie was originally scheduled for 30 June 2028. Warner Bros. has now shifted it to 22 September 2028. That still leaves plenty of time for additional casting and production announcements. Which brings us back to the obvious question.
Who is Batman?
We know Bruce Wayne exists in this story. Dick is taken in by him and becomes his Robin. Yet DC has not announced who will voice Batman.
That makes the eventual casting unusually interesting because the wider DC landscape currently contains several different Batman-related continuities and projects. The Batman Part II belongs to Matt Reeves’ separate universe. DC Studios also continues developing The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce the DCU’s own Batman and Damian Wayne. Whether the Batman voice in Dynamic Duo has any relevance beyond this particular animated film has not been confirmed. So there is no point trying to solve that puzzle before DC does.
For now, Dynamic Duo has its two Robins. The Dark Knight is the one still hiding in the shadows.
