Here are 20 fun facts about the Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman (2022). The below fun facts might contain spoilers.

(1) Neil Gaiman voices the Skull Bird/Crow in A Dream of a Thousand Cats.

(2) The animated segment, “A Dream of a Thousand Cats,” features Tom Sturridge in his pivotal “Sandman” role as Dream, along with a number of guest voice actors, including Sandra Oh as The Prophet, Rosie Day as The Tabby Kitten, David Gyasi as The Grey Cat, Joe Lycett as The Black Cat, Gaiman himself as Crow/Skull Bird, James McAvoy as Golden-Haired Man, David Tennant as Don, Georgia Tennant as Laura.

(3) Dream’s family, The Endless, consists of seven siblings, only four of whom appear in season one. Destiny, Dream, Death, twins Desire and Despair, Destruction, and Delirium are all characters. A book, Dream’s helm, an ankh, a heart, a hook, a sword, and a color swirl are each of their individual sigils. Every character in the comic has their own speech bubble, with the exception of Death, who is the most relatable and human-like of the siblings.

(4) In an interview with E! News, Tom Sturridge acknowledged that he had taken his character’s pouch of sand.

(5) Tom Sturridge (Morpheus) revealed in an interview that Neil Gaiman told him on the first day of filming to “stop being Batman” with his dialogue. Gaiman and series star Tom Sturridge spoke at length about the series in a wide-ranging interview, with the former saying he had to tell the latter to stop acting like Batman when in character. “I growled at him once and told him, ‘Stop being Batman,'” Gaiman explained to Entertainment Weekly. “He was trying to get a bit whispery.” Sturridge continues: “It was literally my first day! But it was incredibly helpful”.

(7) The Corinthian mentions that the serial killer The Bogeyman drowned in Louisiana three years prior in episode 09, “The Collectors.” At the time of the graphic novel’s publication (#14), this is one of the few screenplay allusions to the current DC Universe. It alludes to issue #44 of Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing Volume 2, in which The Bogeyman, after taking his most recent victim, tries to cross the Bayou and drowns, as seen by the elemental guardian Swamp Thing, who is conscious and passive.

(8) For the role of Dream, there were over 1500 auditions and it took eight months to cast Tom Sturridge.

(9) The street signs surrounding in Rose’s dream show scrambled lettering as she looks for Jed, alluding to the myth that you cannot read while you are asleep.

(10) In the first chapter, various occurrences of dream disorders occur worldwide and are eventually dubbed “encephalitis lethargica,” shortly after Dream is caught in 1917 by Roderick Burgess. The strange truth is that this illness actually occurred. It is believed that at least 500,000 persons in Europe were impacted by the encephalitis lethargica epidemic between 1916 and 1930. There is evidence that the illness has multiplied to affect hundreds of thousands more people worldwide. The odd illness’s origin is still unknown today.

(11) The Sandman No. 19, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, won the World Fantasy Award in 1991 for Best Short Fiction.

(12) Netflix’s The Sandman is set to be the most expensive DC show ever made.

(13) The Sandman draws heavily from Greek mythology. The Sandman is a mythical character in European folklore who puts people to sleep and encourages and inspires beautiful dreams by sprinkling magical sand onto their eyes.

(15) Dream is largely responsible for William Shakespeare’s career. We see in the show that Dream speaks to Shakespeare and we can assume that he made some arrangement with him.

(16) The sixth episode of The Sandman, titled “The Sound of Her Wings,” has been praised for its emotional depth and faithfulness to Neil Gaiman’s comic.

(17) Many studios tried to adapt The Sandman into a movie / TV series since 1991. Netflix signed a deal to produce the series in 2019.

(18) The Sandman ranked number one on a global scale on Netflix’s Top 10 titles only three days after its release.

(19) The dreaming was created with a mix of CGI and also a built set.

(20) In the original comic book version of The Sandman, Despair of the Endless is naked every time she appears in the comic. Despair in the Neflix adaption wears clothes.
