Partnership Between Michael Ende Estate and See‑Saw Films
In March 2024, Michael Ende Productions and See-Saw Films announced a collaboration to adapt the 1979 novel into a series of feature films. See-Saw Films, known for critically acclaimed works such as The King’s Speech and The Power of the Dog, will co-produce the project alongside representatives of the Ende legacy.
A Fresh Take on a Timeless Story
Producer Iain Canning of See‑Saw Films told Variety that the story is “both timely and timeless,” with the potential to resonate differently across age groups. He emphasized the importance of offering “a fresh perspective” while preserving the emotional and imaginative spirit of the original novel.
The goal is a faithful adaptation of Ende’s book—not a remake of the 1984 cult classic—which the author famously criticized for diverging from his original vision.
Film Franchise Plans and Unknown Timeline
While no release dates, cast, or directors have been announced, the adaptation is being planned as a multi-film franchise. See-Saw Films and Ende’s estate are actively seeking the creative team who will bring the story of Bastian Balthazar Bux and Fantastica to life on the big screen.
Why This Adaptation Matters
The original novel has sold millions of copies worldwide and been translated into dozens of languages. It explores themes of imagination, identity, and hope through fantastical characters like Falkor the luck dragon and the warrior Atreyu.
Though a television miniseries—Tales from The Neverending Story—was produced in the early 2000s, this new project represents the first major live-action cinematic reboot directly grounded in Ende’s original text.

This new adaptation aims to give fans both nostalgia and a bold new vision. Michael Ende’s fans have long expressed a desire to see the full novel realized on screen, especially the darker, more emotional second half that previous films largely omitted.
As the project evolves, it promises to offer fresh layers of meaning for a new generation, while honoring the imaginative legacy of the original story.
