The Terminator Genisys trailer has been released and it pretty much retconned the entire franchise. Kyle Reese gets sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor from the Terminator , only to discover that she is already prepared for Judgement day and the aging T-800 (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) already there protecting Sarah Conner from the T-1000 (played by Byung-hun Lee).

There are some nice nods to the original, where Kyle Reese breaks into the clothing store and the cop follows him. We then see that it’s actually a T-1000 and Sarah Connor is completely prepared for judgement day.
Emilia Clarke, the new lead, looks very much like the original Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), so she has been a very good casting choice for the role.

Some cool scenes from the trailer are the battles between the humans and the Terminator s. We finally get to see what the time travelling chamber looks like! I would think for something that rips a tear through time and space you’d not want people standing around the rift (just a thought!).

I am not sure if in the part where modern day Arnold shoots at the classic Terminator 1, if the Arnold they show is a CGI body double or if they used footage from the original movie. I suspect it’s from the original movie as it looks softer and more like 80’s film than today’s digital cinema cameras.

One thing that did stand out for me is that I read that Matt Smith would play a large role in the new trilogy of movies that are going to be made, yet he is oddly nowhere in the trailer which is a bit weird for someone who is rumoured to be a pivotal role.

What we can tell from the trailer:
They might have built a time machine – there’s this small slither in the trailer where we can see something looking like the time sphere they use to travel through time. What this has to do with the story I am not sure. Moving forward in time or back to the future or moving further back in time?

Young Sarah Connor – There’s this small slither where it’s shown that Sarah Connor is removed from a house by a younger T-800 Terminator . This is most likely the Terminator sent to save her – he probably rescued her from something – maybe a Terminator sent by Skynet?

Bike Chase – Another classic scene from Terminator 2 – the bike chase – might make its way into the reboot of Terminator as there is a small frame of Arnold jumping the bike and landing on truck or some large vehicle.
With the franchise being retconned, what are your opinions? Did they do the right thing or should they have done something different? Let us know in the comments.

PS: For those of you who don’t know what Retconned means, herewith a short definition: revise (an aspect of a fictional work) retrospectively, typically by introducing a piece of new information that imposes a different interpretation on previously described events.
