Synopsis: After disastrous breakups with their boyfriends, two ladies, one from America (Cameron Diaz) and the other from the United Kingdom (Kate Winslet), exchange residences at Christmas time. Each woman falls in love with a local man (Jude Law, Jack Black), but they are aware that their relationship may be jeopardized by their impending return home.

Nancy Meyers wrote, produced, and directed The Holiday, a romantic comedy film with a Christmas theme that was released in 2006. It stars Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as two lovelorn women from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean who temporarily trade residences to avoid heartbreak during the holiday season. It was distributed by Columbia Pictures and Universal Studios and filmed in both California and England. Eli Wallach, Shannyn Sossamon, Edward Burns, and Rufus Sewell play key supporting roles alongside Jude Law and Jack Black.

The Holiday was first published in Spain on December 6, 2006, and then in North America and the United Kingdom on December 8, 2006. It was an international success, grossing more than $205 million. The film’s visual aesthetic design and acting, particularly Winslet’s performance as society section editor Iris, received positive reviews. Critics, on the other hand, were divided on the plot, with some criticizing plot sections that lacked surprises or were foreseeable. For her portrayal, Diaz received an ALMA Award nomination, while Winslet was nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award the following year. The film received a Teen Choice Award in the Chick Flick category in 2007.

Fun facts:

  • On an episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (1992), Dustin Hoffman said that his cameo in the film was not scripted and unplanned. He was driving by the Blockbuster shown in the film and saw all of the cameras and equipment so he decided to stop in and see what was happening. Because he knew director Nancy Meyers, they worked up a scene which ultimately made the final cut
  • The website Amanda and Iris use to exchange houses is a real website, homeexchange.com.
