Predator: Badlands – Review
Predator: Badlands is a bold and refreshing take on the Predator franchise, and in my opinion it delivers one of the most interesting stories we’ve seen in years. Instead of humans being hunted, the film stars a Predator as the main character — a young outcast named Dek who crash-lands on the hostile alien world of Genna and must earn his place in Predator society by facing the deadliest creature he can find.
Dek isn’t your typical silent killer. He’s an underdog within his own species, rejected by his clan, which gives the movie a surprising emotional core. That vulnerability makes his journey compelling — you genuinely root for him.
Early on, Dek meets Thia (played by Elle Fanning), a damaged Weyland-Yutani android stranded on Genna. Their partnership is one of the movie’s strengths because it blends action with character moments that are both funny and heartfelt. Their dynamic gives Badlands a bit of a buddy adventure tone, while still keeping the tension high as they face dangerous wildlife and relentless threats across the “Death Planet.”
Visually the film is stunning — the alien landscapes, varied creatures, and worldbuilding evoke that Alien-style sci-fi epic feel, but with enough originality to stand on its own. The action sequences are exciting and well-paced, and the decision to make the Predator a protagonist makes the story feel fresh rather than repetitive.
The movie balances spectacle with character growth, and while it’s less bloody than past entries, it doesn’t shy away from sci-fi violence or intensity. It also expands Predator lore in meaningful ways, giving emotional depth to a franchise that can sometimes feel one-dimensional.
Final Score: 8.5/10.
In my view, Predator: Badlands feels like a fresh evolution of the franchise — part sci-fi adventure, part emotional journey, and definitely worth watching if you like Alien Earth-style sci-fi with heart and action.
