John McClane (Bruce Willis) arrives in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve to reunite with his estranged wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia). John is transported to the Nakatomi Plaze building, where Holly’s boss is hosting a Christmas party. The party is disrupted by Hans Gruber and his heavily armed group. They manage to grab the tower. John McClane who manages to slip away and saves the day.
Fun fact:
Remember Hans Gruber’s shocked expression as he died at the conclusion of the movie?
That was 100% genuine. Director John McTiernan sent actor Alan Rickman flying from a 20-foot mockup of the Nakatomi building a full second before he expected it in order to capture true emotion on his face. Rickman was understandably enraged by the unexpected dive, especially given he had major doubts about the stunt’s safety in the first place.
Nobody ever does anything like that to Hans Gruber and gets away with it.
