The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert Review

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a bold, dazzling road movie that leans even further into spectacle while still delivering a deeply human story. Starring Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving, and Guy Pearce, the film follows three drag performers crossing the Australian outback in a bus named Priscilla, and what unfolds is equal parts outrageous, emotional, and unforgettable.

Much like To Wong Foo, the casting plays with expectations. Stamp, known for more serious and traditionally masculine roles, delivers a quietly powerful performance, while Weaving and Pearce fully embrace the flamboyance, comedy, and vulnerability of their characters. There is a fearless commitment across the board that allows the film to move seamlessly between over the top camp and genuinely touching moments.

Visually, this is where the film truly stands out. The costumes are iconic, wild, extravagant, and completely unapologetic, set against the stark, sunburnt landscapes of Australia. That contrast gives the film a unique identity, turning every performance into something almost surreal. Beneath the glitter, it explores themes of identity, isolation, prejudice, and resilience with surprising depth.

It is a little rougher and more confrontational than To Wong Foo, not shying away from the realities of discrimination, which gives its emotional moments even more weight. Yet it never loses its sense of fun, powered by a standout soundtrack and sharp humour.

Campy, defiant, and iconic, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is both a celebration and a statement, a film that embraces drag culture while grounding it in real, lived experience.
