Netflix’s Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory Is Real. Here’s What the New Animated Film Actually Is
A new animated Willy Wonka project is officially on the way, but it is not the adaptation many people might be expecting.
Netflix has officially announced Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, a new animated feature set in the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The project is part of Netflix’s ongoing expansion of the Roald Dahl universe following its acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021.
Unlike previous film versions, this is not a direct retelling of Roald Dahl’s classic story. It is a brand new continuation with an original storyline.
A New Story, Not a Remake
That distinction matters.
While the title sounds like another adaptation of the familiar Golden Ticket story, Netflix has confirmed that Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory takes place after the events audiences already know.
In this new version, Willy Wonka returns after serving prison time connected to the infamous blueberry incident, only to find himself facing a new generation of children trying to break into his factory.
It is a much stranger and more comedic setup than the original novel, suggesting the film will focus less on wonder and discovery and more on chaos, legacy, and the consequences of Wonka’s world.
It also introduces a new lead character named Charlie Paley, meaning this is not simply Charlie Bucket’s story revisited.
Who’s Making It?
The film is being directed by Jared Stern, best known for writing The Lego Batman Movie and co-writing several major animated projects.
A lot of online posts have called him “the director of The Lego Batman Movie,” but that is inaccurate. Stern wrote that film. He did not direct it.
This will be one of his biggest directing projects to date.
The animation is being handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks, the same studio behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the recent animated hit KPop Demon Hunters.
That is a strong sign Netflix is aiming for high-end animation.
The Cast
Netflix has confirmed two major voice actors.
Kit Connor will voice Charlie Paley, the film’s new lead. Connor is best known for his breakout role in Heartstopper.
Meanwhile, Taika Waititi will voice Willy Wonka and also serve as an executive producer.
Waititi’s involvement suggests the film will lean into eccentric comedy and unpredictable energy, which fits Wonka naturally.
Why Netflix Is Expanding Roald Dahl
Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company to build a larger library of films and series based on Dahl’s stories.
Instead of repeating old adaptations, Netflix appears focused on creating new stories inside familiar worlds.
That makes Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory one of the clearest examples of that strategy.
Rather than retelling a story already adapted by Gene Wilder, Johnny Depp, and most recently Timothée Chalamet in Wonka, Netflix is expanding the mythology.
Final Thoughts
The biggest thing to understand about Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory is simple. This is not another remake.
It is a new animated continuation with original characters, a new premise, and a very different angle on Willy Wonka’s world.
With Jared Stern directing, Sony Pictures Imageworks animating, Kit Connor leading, and Taika Waititi voicing Wonka, the project has a strong creative foundation.
For fans of Roald Dahl’s strange and chaotic imagination, this could be one of the most unusual and ambitious returns to the chocolate factory yet.
